Music Ministry Vision
Worship
at Christ Church seeks to heed and give new voice to the larger
church's witness in song to God's character, saving acts, and
transformation of creation — a witness that spans the centuries and
spans the globe. In the visions of worship that close our
Scriptures, songs go up to God from the redeemed of "every tribe and
language and people and nation" and, as the age of the Church has
moved forward, from the redeemed of every time, from the psalmists
of Israel through the new songs of the early Church through the new
expressions of faith and hope sung in each successive age.
Our choral programs therefore include a wide range of musical
offerings, from Gregorian and Anglican chant to Renaissance motets
to Classical anthems to spirituals and Gospel to contemporary
praise.
Our congregational singing reaches back to the Reformation
chorales and Wesleyan hymns that remind us of the foundations of our
faith, out to Hispanic, African, Caribbean, and Oriental songs of
worship, back to Gospel songs of assurance and hope, and forward to
new songs giving expression to new experiences of God's presence in
our midst.
Key Principles
The role of music in our worship is guided by a few key
principles: The songs we sing, whether choral or congregational,
should
- Reflect sound theology and ethics,
- Richly inform our spiritual practice and
transformation into mature disciples,
- Orient us toward what God desires to work within us,
and
- Lift us into the presence of God, who is worshiped
in the beauty of holiness.
